International broadcasters protest against intentional jamming from Ethiopia

0,,6115079_4,00

May 30, 2014 (Deutsche Welle) — Due to intentional jamming from Ethiopia the reception of TV programs by Deutsche Welle and numerous other international broadcasters is currently severely impacted in large parts of the Arab world.
BBC, France 24 and Voice of America are also among the broadcasters affected by the jamming.
The satellite provider Arabsat has identified Ethiopia as the source of the strong jamming signals on all its three satellites. Ethiopian authorities have not responded to the incident yet.
Peter Limbourg, director general of Deutsche Welle: “This is a gross violation of the internationally recognized right of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Deutsche Welle, BBC, France 24 and Voice of America strongly condemn this action against the free flow of impartial information. We urge the Ethiopian authorities to immediately cease the jamming.”

Australia’s Oromo people rally in Canberra, Australia

PRESS RELEASE

Rally starts at Parliament Drive in Canberra on Monday 2nd June at 10am
australiaMore than 400 Oromo across Victoria, NSW, QLD, TAS, SA and WA will be gathering at Canberra’s Parliament house in a bid to expose the Ethiopian government’s recent human rights violations dubbed “Oromo Protests”. Since April 25, leaked photographs and videos show Ethiopian security forces shooting live ammunition at unarmed students in universities across Oromia. Reports of 85 students are confirmed as dead, 500 protestors wounded and over 5000 people detained in unknown camp locations as the Ethiopian government restriction of public media is in full force.
In response, more than 30 international cities including Washington, Oslo, Tel Aviv and London have staged mass peace protests, picking up interest globally and trending heavily on social media. US Congress members have also released legislature on May 9 to publicly condemn the violence perpetrated by the Ethiopian government against its people as well as publicly acknowledge and urge the Ethiopian government to respect human rights and democratic processes.

Ethiopia under fire over journalist arrest

May 29, 2014, Addis Ababa (AFP) – The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Friday called on authorities in Ethiopia to release a journalist being held without charge following a spate of similar arrests in recent weeks.
An Ethiopian court on Tuesday extended by 14 days the pre-trial detention of Elias Gebru, editor-in-chief of the independent news magazine Enku who was detained for questioning in connection with a column published in his paper.”The detention without charge of Elias Gebru is the latest move by the Ethiopian government to tighten the noose on the country’s independent press,” said Mohamed Keita of the CPJ.”We call on authorities to release Elias immediately and to stop arresting journalists as a means to quell information and debate,” he alleged.

Land Grabbing in Africa, the new colonialism

May 29, 2014 (This is Africa) — The silent recolonisation of Africa is happening on a mass scale. To address this issue, the first Africa Conference on Land Grabs is set to take place in South Africa on 27–30 Oct. 2014. Land is the source of life and death, but it might not always be with us.

Ambo Protests: Spying the Spy?

MUST READ
Previous eye witness by Jen and Josh:  Ambo Protests – Personal Account
May 29, 2014 (Jen and Josh in Ethiopia) — After the protests and violence in Ambo, we fled to the capital city of Addis Ababa and stayed at a little hotel called Yilma. Immediately, we started telling everyone about what happened in Ambo. We called and texted our friends, we talked to anyone at the hotel that would listen, and we posted things on Facebook. If we tell everyone about the protesters in Ambo being imprisoned and killed, surely it will stop, we reasoned.
The next day, two strange men – one tall with dark skin, the other short with lighter skin – struck up a conversation with us in the hotel restaurant.

Ethiopia tightens its grip on media ahead of 2015 elections

images_2

May 28, 2014 (World News Publishing Focus) — “The current regime follows this pattern: immediately before elections, they start to muzzle every critical voice,” protests Endalk Chala, a co-founder and member of the Ethiopian blogging collective called “Zone 9” – a proverbial reference to Ethiopia’s situation beyond the eight zones that divide the notorious Kaliti prison, where many journalists and political prisoners are kept behind bars.
While pursuing his doctorate in the United States, Endalk recently saw six of his colleagues arrested along with three independent journalists on April 25 and 26. The detainees face charges related to accepting assistance from a foreign human rights group and “inciting violence” through social media, though no formal charges have been filed. The youngest of the collective, 25 year old Atnaf Berahane, was reportedly tortured during police investigations.

Ambo Protests: A Personal Account

Please read and share this eyewitness account! The government has control over media and telecommunications in Ethiopia and has been largely successful so far in keeping the story of the student protests quiet. Two brave Peace Corps volunteers who were stationed for 1 1/2 years in Ambo but left this week because of the violence have asked for our help in spreading the truth about what is happening.
This account of events in the Oromia town of Ambo–events which began exactly one month ago, on April 25–was originally posted on the blog Jen & Josh in Ethiopia: A Chronicle of Our Peace Corps Experience.

MENA country director deported from Ethiopia

May 25, 2014, Egypt (Daily News) — Egyptian foreign ministry says no explanation was provided by the Ethiopian side and demanded one
Egyptian citizen Hamdy Al-Anany was deported from Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, an incident which prompted the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to express “deep regrets”, in a statement on Sunday, and demand an explanation.
Al-Anany, who served as the Ethiopia director of the Egypt’s official state-run news agency, the Middle East News Agency (MENA), was detained by Ethiopian authorities before his deportation.
Spokesman of Egypt’s Foreign Ministry Badr Abdelatty said that the Egyptian foreign ministry demanded in an official memo that that the Ethiopian foreign ministry provide “explanations and clarifications” on the reasons behind Al-Anany’s deportation and the failure to notify the Egyptian Embassy once he was detained.

Yemen: Migrants Held at ‘Torture Camps’

Hold Traffickers, Officials Accountable for Role in Abuses

hrwMay 25, 2014, Sanaa(HRW) –Traffickers in Yemen hold African migrants in detention camps, torturing them to extort payment from their families, with the complicity of local officials, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Sometimes the torture ends in death. The Yemeni government should vigorously investigate and prosecute human traffickers and members of the security forces involved in the abuses.
The 82-page report, “‘Yemen’s Torture Camps’: Abuse of Migrants by Human Traffickers in a Climate of Impunity,”documents harms suffered by migrants, most from the Horn of Africa, who try to travel through Yemen on their way to Saudi Arabia for work. Human Rights Watch found that various Yemeni security agencies in the border town of Haradh, where dozens of camps exist, and at checkpoints, allow the human trafficking industry to flourish with little government interference.

Ethiopia crackdown on student protests taints higher education success

Western backers of the Ethiopian education system should not ignore reports of violent clashes on university campuses
By Paul O’Keeffe
Oromia, Ethiopia, where at least three dozen people were reportedly shot dead by security forces during student protests
Oromia, Ethiopia, where at least three dozen people were reportedly shot dead by security forces during student protests
May 22, 2014 (The Guardian) — Over the past 15 years, Ethiopia has become home to one of the world’s fastest-growing higher education systems. Increasing the number of graduates in the country is a key component of the government’s industrialisation strategy and part of its ambitious plan to become a middle-income country by 2025. Since the 1990s, when there were just two public universities, almost 30 new institutions have sprung up.
On the face of it, this is good news for ordinary Ethiopians. But dig a little deeper and tales abound of students required to join one of the three government parties, with reports of restricted curricula, classroom spies and crackdowns on student protests commonplace at universities.

Ethiopia: Why do Somali People of Ogadenia State Demand for Independence from Ethiopia?

By Ahmed Abdi | May 21, 2014
Ogadenia“Injustice in the end produces independence.” whoever coined this phrase is right. As Ogadenia state is bleeding because of demanding Independence from Ethiopian occupation.
Ethiopia does not provide a quality education, proper health care for all, and Ethiopia does not respect for human rights and the rule of law in the Ogadenia state. Moreover, Somali people in Ogadenia state are second-citizens in their soil, there have never been equality and justice in Ogadenia state.
The BBC’s Elizabeth Blunt, who had a rare access to the region reported:
“An elderly goat herder, beside himself with indignation, launching a diatribe in front of a senior local official. He had lost two sons, he said, fighting for Ethiopia against Eritrea. And now the soldiers come to his village, chase everyone out and burn their houses, and then have the effrontery to tell him he is not a true Ethiopian.”

Diaspora speaks for deliberately silenced Oromos

Ethiopian government responds to UN review

By Amy Bergquist, The Advocates for Human Rights
7May 20, 2014 (Twin Cities Daily Planet) — When students in Ethiopia started protesting last month against the Ethiopian Government’s proposal to annex territory from the state of Oromia to facilitate the expansion of the capital city Addis Ababa, diasporans mobilized to show their solidarity. As federal “Agazi” security forces cracked down, opening fire on peaceful protesters, placing students on lock-down in their dormitories, and conducting mass arrests, Oromos around the world staged rallies and hunger strikes to raise international awareness and to call on the governments of the countries where they live to withhold aid and put pressure on the Ethiopian Government to respect human rights.
In the first three posts in this series, I discussed the Oromo diaspora’s mobilization to shed light on the human rights violations on the ground, the sharp criticism the government of Ethiopia faced during the Universal Periodic Review on May 6, and the steps the Oromo diaspora in Minnesota is taking to show solidarity and press for accountability in Ethiopia. This final post tells some of the stories of Oromos in the diaspora who have spoken with friends and family on the ground in Oromia about events over the past three weeks, and also covers the Ethiopian government’s formal response to the UN review and offers some suggestions for next steps.

Gambella Nilotes Army Condemns Killing Oromos for Their Land

GNUM

Press Release
15th May 2014, Gambella
“Ethiopian Government Must Stop Killing Oromos for their Land”

Gambella Nilotes United Movement/Army (GNUM/A) condemns the mass killing perpetuated by the TPLF-Led Ethiopian government’s security forces against the Oromo University students and other innocent civilians which occurred in many parts of Oromia Region particularly in Ambo Zone since last two weeks. The students were peacefully demonstrating their constitutional right for the Oromo farmers who were/are forcefully and illegally evicted from their ancestral land around Finfine (Addis Ababa) due to new Addis Ababa Integrated Master Plan imposed upon them.

IOYA Appeal Letter

IOYA_Logo

Dear Sir, Madam,
We are reaching out to you as the Board of officers of the International Oromo Youth Association (IOYA) whose nation is in turmoil back in Oromia, Ethiopia. Recently, Oromo students have been protesting against the new Addis Ababa “Integrated Master Plan” which aims at incorporating smaller towns surrounding Addis Ababa for the convenience of vacating land for investors by displacing millions of Oromo farmers. As a political move, this will essentially result in the displacement of the indigenous peoples and their families. Oromo farmers will be dispossessed of their land and their survival both economic and cultural terms will be threatened. The Oromos strongly believe that this plan will expose their natural environment to risk, threaten their economic means of livelihood (subsistence farming), and violate their constitutional rights.

OromoProtests FDG Updates: Two Oromo Students of Rift Valley University Killed in Adama; Also the Nekemte Hospital’s Ward Filled with Oromo Students Brutally Injured by the Ethiopian TPLF Authorities During the Nonviolent #OromoProtests FDG

According to sources, two Oromo students of the Rift Valley University – identified as Bilisuma Lami and Milisha Belete, were killed by what is believed to be a premeditated and government-sponsored car accident in Adama on May 16, 2014. The two had been arrested and put in prison for peacefully protesting against the Addis Ababa Master Plan for the last two weeks, and it was only a few days ago that they were released from prison when the accident took their lives.
Meanwhile, it’s been reported that one Nekemte Hospital’s ward is still highly crowded with severely injured Oromo students (see photos below). The students were brutally injured, most recently on May 14, 2014, by the Ethiopian TPLF authorities during the nonviolent #OromoProtests FDG against the Addis Ababa Master Plan, which aims to evict millions of Oromo farmers from their lands in Central Oromiyaa, especially around the Oromiyaan districts surrounding Addis Ababa (which is known as Finfinnee by the indigenous Oromo people).

Atlanta’s Oromo Community Protesting Against The Tyrant Ethiopian Government And Challenging Cnn To Cover The Ongoing Crisis!

Screen-Shot

Atlanta, Georgia, 15 May 2014 (OromoTV) – We the Oromo Community of Atlanta, Georgia gather at the CNN Headquarters to demand the Ethiopian government immediately halt all the senseless killings of innocent University students throughout Ethiopia. We ask CNN and its affiliates as trusted and reliable sources of media to launch a diligent and timely investigation on the current crisis in Ethiopia and draw attention to the indiscriminate killings of innocent students. Furthermore, we demand the Obama Administration unequivocally condemn the actions of the Ethiopian Government and urgently take action to end the massacre! Students are being murdered for peacefully protesting against the Addis Ababa Master Plan which would expand the capital city and annex land from farmers in the surrounding area. This planed annexation is in violation of United Nations and African Union Charters on Human Rights. According to reports from trusted sources, since April 25, 2014 as many as 100 civilians have been murdered by government forces. In addition 500 have been injured, while over 5000 students have been detained at unknown camps!

Executive Committee of Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC): Continue the Struggle Until the Addis Ababa Master Plan is Cancelled; Until a Neutral Inquiry Commission is Established for Justice; Until Political Prisoners are Freed

We want to appreciate the sacrifices of Oromo diaspora in holding demonstrations worldwide in solidarity with #OromoProtests. The Minnesota hunger strike should be the best model that all Oromo communities around the world should follow.
We appeal to all Oromos in the diaspora and at home to face the national challenge by taking the following actions:

Finfinnee was turned into headquarters of the occupying force where Oromo was forced to serve with sweat and blood rather than getting benefit out of its formation.  After the overthrow of Darg the state of Oromiyaa and the interest it has in Finfinnee was formally recognized by the occupying regime and a sort of administrative structure was created for it.Finfinneen Oromiyaa keessatt bu’uurfamte kanaaf qaama see ta’uun wal hin falmisiisu. ETHIOPIA: AUTHORITIES MUST PROVIDE JUSTICE FOR SCORES OF PROTESTERS KILLED, INJURED AND ARRESTED IN OROMIA

13 May 2014
amnestyAmnesty International condemns the use of excessive force by security forces against peaceful protesters in a number of locations across the Oromia region during the last two weeks, which has resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens of people including students and children. Many hundreds of protesters are reported to have been arbitrarily arrested, and are being detained incommunicado and without charge. Detainees are at risk of torture.
The Ethiopian government must immediately instruct the security forces to cease using deadly force against peaceful protesters, and to release any person who has been arrested solely because of their involvement in peaceful protests. These incidents must be urgently and properly investigated, and suspected perpetrators should be prosecuted in effective trial proceedings.

Atrocities and Mass Eviction Can Only Be Curbed by Resistance

(OLF Statement – May, 12, 2014)
The insistence of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) regime on escalating the use of violent and brutal means to respond to the peaceful and legitimate demand of the Oromo people triggered and intensified wide uprising in Oromia. In this uprising that involved the youth and the others from all walk of life, tens have been murdered, hundreds wounded and thousands detained and dismissed from school. This brutal action of the fascistic dictatorial regime in front of the Ethiopian peoples and the rest of the world once again exposed its hatred for the Oromo people.
Even though the regime could not deny the glaring atrocity, its 23 years history shows that it will concoct its usual boring stage show to create escape goat for its atrocities as evidenced by the following episodes.
