Press Release: The stateless Oromo Persecuted at Home, Harassed Abroad

Oromo_community_australia
PRESS RELEASE
The stateless Oromo Persecuted at Home, Harassed Abroad
Australian Oromo Community in Victoria will be gathering at Spring Street and corner of Treasury Place, next to Victoria Parliament in a bid to express our grave concern and appeal to the recent tragedies on Oromo and other refugees from Horn of Africa. The recent killings of Oromo refugee in Libya and South Africa and displaced Oromo refugee Yemen due to war are heart breaking.
Oromo refugees, who have escaped the dire situation in their home country, faced daily terror at the hands of the Ethiopian regime. They have fled from the widespread extra-judicial killings, abductions and disappearances, removal from their ancestral land, torture and constant humiliations that has been going on for years. Hence, many Oromo refugees have been forced to flee from their homeland.

Ethiopia: Police must stop the use of excessive force against demonstrators

amnesty

PUBLIC STATEMENT

April 22, 2015
AI Index: AFR 25/1515/2015
Amnesty International calls on the Ethiopian authorities to ensure that police refrain from excessive use of force in policing demonstrations, after police violently dispersed mass protests in Addis Ababa yesterday. The Ethiopian authorities must respect the rights of demonstrators to exercise their rights to freedom of expression and of peaceful assembly.
Video footage and photographs posted online show police beating protestors who appear to be offering no resistance, and tear gas being used against the crowd. A journalist in Addis Ababa told Amnesty International that 48 people had been seriously injured and admitted to different hospitals, and that many others sustained minor injuries. Two photos show wounded people being treated at hospital. Hundreds of others are reported to have been arrested.

Ethiopia: The Ethiopian Government is Responsible for the Inhuman Treatments against Ethiopian Refugees and Asylum Seekers around the World

HRLHA

HRLHA Press Release
The  Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa has been greatly saddened by the cold-blooded killing of 30 Christian Ethiopian refugees and asylum seekers in the past week  in Libya by a group called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria/ ISIS. The HRLHA also highly concerned about thousands of Ethiopian refugees and asylum seekers living in different parts of Yemen were victimized due to the political crises in  Yemen  and hundreds have suffered in South Africa because of the unprecedented actions taken by a gang opposing refugees and asylum seekers in the country.  The suppressive policy  of the EPRDF/TPLF government  has forced millions of Ethiopians to flee their country in the past twenty-four years. The mass influx of Ethiopian citizens into neighboring countries every year has been due to the EPRDF/TPLF policy of denying its citizens their socioeconomic and political rights. They have also fled out of fear of political persecution and detention.  It has been repeatedly reported by human rights organizations, humanitarian and other non – governmental organizations that Ethiopia is producing a large number of refugees, estimated at over two hundred fifty thousand every year.

Continued detention of Ethiopian journalists unacceptable – UN human rights experts

unochrGENEVA (UN OHCHR) – The Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, David Kaye, and the Special Rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Maina Kiai, today said the detention of the six so-called “Zone Nine” bloggers and three other journalists in Ethiopia over the past year has been “absolutely unacceptable”.
The bloggers, who used an online platform to report on social and political issues in Ethiopia, were arrested on April 25 and 26 last year and have remained in detention ever since. The Federal First Instance Court of Ethiopia reportedly charged them under the 2009 Anti-Terrorism Proclamation for “working with foreign human rights organizations and inciting violence through social media to create instability in the country.” Their trial has been adjourned several times.

Ethiopia: Free Zone 9 Bloggers, Journalists

hrwNairobi (HRW) – Ethiopian authorities should immediately release nine bloggers and journalists arrested a year ago who are being prosecuted on politically motivated charges, Human Rights Watch said today. The six bloggers, who belong to the Zone 9 blogging collective, and three journalists were arrested on April 25 and 26, 2014, in a coordinated sweep in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. They were charged under the criminal code and anti-terrorism law for having links to banned opposition groups and trying to violently overthrow the government.
In the past year the court in the Zone 9 bloggers trial has adjourned 27 times, prolonging the case seemingly unnecessarily. The unreasonable delays, lack of access to lawyers, and various procedural irregularities raise serious concerns about the defendants’ rights to due process and a fair trial, Human Rights Watch said. The next hearing is scheduled for May 26, 2015, two days after Ethiopia’s general elections.

U.S Department of State Endorsing of Upcoming Elections: Denial and Disrespect

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA)

HRLHAHRLHA Statement:
The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) strongly opposes to the position that the U.S State Department has taken in regards to the upcoming Ethiopian election and the overall democratization process in the country in the past twenty-four years; and describes the comments by the Under  Secretary of State as a sign of disrespect for ordinary citizens of Ethiopia and disregard for the human miseries that hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian have gone through under the EPRDF/TPLF-led government.

Dear Ethiopian Citizens — Your Government Does Not Give A Damn About You — Unless You Are Tigray People!

BY THE EDITORIAL BOARD OF OromoTV.com
Dear-Ethiopian-CitizensUndoubtedly the current news keep coming out from all directions is a clear reminder of your government don’t care much about you; unless you happened to be born as Tigray People. The most privileged sector of Ethiopian society — as we speak, perhaps the lucky one. To understand your situation you don’t have to go further, but think and began to digest what happened to your people in Yemen, South Africa, and an epic proportion of Ethiopian migrants sunk crossing the Mediterranean Sea. Most importantly, the barbaric predicament your citizens have come to wittiness in Libya.

Ethiopia Bloggers Evidence Doesn’t Back Charges, Lawyer Says

By William Davison
Zone-9(Bloomberg) — Ethiopian prosecutors have failed to present evidence relating to charges that a group of bloggers and journalists support terrorism, a defense lawyer at the latest court hearing said.
Six members of the Zone 9 blogging group and three freelance journalists were charged in July at the Federal High Court in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, for working with banned organizations such as the U.S.-based Ginbot 7, which the Horn of Africa nation categorizes as a terrorist group. A witness on Wednesday testified that police last year collected a political manifesto from a Health Ministry office, where one of the defendants worked, lawyer Ameha Mekonnen said.
“No witness is brought who has either direct or indirect knowledge of the material element of the charge,” Ameha said in an interview. “The witnesses are here to prove that there was no maltreatment or pressure when the search was conducted.”

OSA: The Oromo Students Protest Movement and the Tigre-led Ethiopian Government’s Repression

OSAlogohead2013

Two members of the Oromo Studies Association (OSA), Asafa Jalata and Zeituna Kalil, organized a workshop entitled, “The Oromo Students Protest Movement and the Tigre-led Ethiopian Government’s Repression” at the World Social Forum, held from March 24 to 28, 2015, in Tunis, Tunisia. This workshop was organized under the themes of equality, dignity and rights. The central themes of this global forum included the crossroads of citizenship; beyond borders crossroads; the planet neighborhood; the square of social justice; the neighborhood of equality, dignity and rights; and the square of economy and alternative to neo-liberal globalization. At the same time, different social, political, cultural and economic movements organized events and activities in open spaces and in tents demonstrating their agendas through slogans, flags, dancing, singing, and the distribution and exchanging of information. The slogan of the forum was “Another World is Possible.” This slogan reflects the political aspiration of the Oromo people in general and the Oromo students in particular who are struggling and sacrificing their precious lives to create a free and democratic Oromia, which will be liberated from of all forms of oppression, exploitation, murder, terrorism and gross human rights violations. This does not mean that the Oromo only care for themselves; but their struggle is an integral part of the struggles of all colonized peoples, particularly those groups that have been brutalized and have suffered under the yoke of Ethiopian colonialism. So while struggling to liberate their country, the Oromo also aspire to build a multinational democracy with peoples who are also struggling for liberation, sovereignty, democracy and social justice.

Lessons Learned from the African Union Mission in Somalia

igad_ethiopia

A Pentagon report blames Ethiopian regime’s atrocities for the creation of Al Shabab

April 7, 2015 (Joint Special Operations University and the Center for Special Operations Studies and Research)  — Ethiopian soldiers were accused of committing a wide range of atrocities, including firing mortars on civilian hospitals, press institutions, and houses, and rape, theft, kidnapping, and murder of Somali civilians. Among many Somalis, these strikes established the U.S. as an instigator of the Ethiopian invasion, which provided a propaganda opening for al Qaeda and precipitated a flood of foreign jihadi fighters into Mogadishu. By early 2008, confidential Somali sources estimate that some 2,000 foreign fighters had entered Somalia, approximately 40 percent of them from the Somali diaspora. While the moderate members of the SCIC fled into Eritrea and Djibouti—where they established allied political movements called the Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia—the hardline elements of the SCIC regrouped, and more were trained by the new foreign fighters in the use of remote-controlled detonations. Suicide bombings and other un-Somali tactics became increasingly common.

Western Governments’ Aid is Funding Human Rights Repression in Ethiopia

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA)
hrlhaPresented by Garoma B. Wakessa, Executive Director
March 28-29, 2015.
After its first year of being in power, the TPLF government made its next step the weakening and/or eliminating of all independent opposition political organizations in the country.
To pretend that it was democratizing the country, the TPLF signed five international human rights documents from 1991 to 2014. These include the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment”. Despite this, it is widely known that the TPLF has tortured many of its citizens ever since it assumed power and has continued that to the present day.

Finfinne versus Brussels differentiate the real democracy from fake democracy

OromiaRegionMap
Oromia (Africa) with 40 million inhabitants
europe
Belgium(Europe) with 10.5 million inhabitants
By Baro Keno Deressa | April 1, 2015
My intention with this paper is not to write the history of Finfinne (Addis ababa) and Brussel, But to oppose the puppet of TPLF with so called diaspora Oromo and to emphasize the total absence of democracy and humanity under TPLF rule. The second message is to call all true Oromo’s to stop infighting and focus on bitter struggle with concrete message.
