The Shooting at the Ethiopian Embassy

By Gurmu Bantayehu | September 30, 2014

Hello America! Welcome to Ethiopia!!

A TPLF security thug at the Ethiopian Embassy brandishing and firing live bullets towards peaceful protesters
A TPLF security officer brandishing and firing live bullets
What I saw on US TVs on Monday, September 29, 2014 is unbelievable but factual. I doubt that the world has ever experienced such barbaric act by an Embassy. It is the replica of the daily massacre being carried out in Ethiopia, now being shown to the World. It is Tigre modus operandiin Ambo and many places in Ethiopia. This is how Ethiopians are being treated daily by their government. The west would not admit it but this incident demonstrates graphically the daily butchery in a country closely nurtured by the West; a country where the rule of the jungle is the order of the day. It is exactly what Ethiopian asylum seekers are running away from; a fitting proof of the reasons for seeking asylum. The atrocities in Ethiopia, which the US government have been ignoring, is displayed in the US backyard, the capital city. As they say in the US, “ The chicken came home to roost”.

Man opens fire during Ethiopian Embassy protest in Washington

September 29, 2014 (Reuters) – A gunman opened fire during a protest on the Ethiopian Embassy grounds on Monday, according to a video of the incident, but no injuries were reported.
A spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service said it had detained a possible shooter after a report at about 12:15 p.m. EDT that shots were fired near the embassy in northwest Washington, D.C.
Witnesses said the gunfire took place inside the embassy compound during a protest against the Horn of Africa nation’s government.
“About half a block from the embassy, I heard at least four shots, and I thought there were people killed,” demonstrator Tesfa Simagne told Reuters Television.
A video taken inside the embassy gates and carried by the website of Ethiopian Satellite Television shows a man wearing a dark suit and brandishing a silver handgun.

UN experts urge Ethiopia to stop using anti-terrorism legislation to curb human rights

UN-HUMAN-RIGHT

September 21, 2014, GENEVA (United Nations Human Rights) – A group of United Nations human rights experts* today urged the Government of Ethiopia to stop misusing anti-terrorism legislation to curb freedoms of expression and association in the country, amid reports that people continue to be detained arbitrarily.
The experts’ call comes on the eve of the consideration by Ethiopia of a series of recommendations made earlier this year by members of the Human Rights Council in a process known as the Universal Periodic Review which applies equally to all 193 UN Members States. These recommendations are aimed at improving the protection and promotion of human rights in the country, including in the context of counter-terrorism measures.

International Oromo Youth Association’s Press Release

September 16, 2014
On July 1, 2014, the International Oromo Youth Association and the Advocates for Human Rights submitted a detailed report to the Pre-Sessional Working Group of the Committee on the Rights of the Child. The report identified numerous human rights violations of the rights of children under the age of 18 in Ethiopia. The report concluded that ethnic identity is a major risk factor—children belonging to certain ethnic groups such as the Oromo face severe discrimination and rights violations. The report specifically focuses on human rights violations that followed the recent peaceful protests that occurred across schools in the Oromia region. Other issues pertaining to liberty, security, privacy, freedom of expression and association, family, basic health and welfare, education, and leisure and cultural activities were also included in the report.

Nageenya Keenya; Oromo Freedom Songs Remix

Nageenya Keenya – Our SafetyOromo Freedom Songs Remix Part One 2014

Moving Forward: Sacrificing Time for Oromo Identity

Please mark your calendar to come to our event that will be held on October 5, 2014 at Footscray Park.
Irreechaa-poster3-218x300September 10,  2014 (Advocacy For Oromia) — The Oromos are not some secret and mystic society; they are generous, harmonious and connected society who wants to share their unique values with others.
For Oromo, Irreechaa is a good way to pass on cultural knowledge and it helps to build pride in young people and helps them to have confidence when talking with others about their culture and identity. Hence, celebrating Irreechaa means having the confidence that comes from knowing the Oromos have something unique and vital values in their long journey.
For most Oromians, Irreechaa is considered to be the ending of rainy season, and beginning of new fresh life and new aspiration for the future. The Irreechaa is celebrated every year at the beginning of Birraa (the sunny new season after the dark, rainy winter season) throughout Oromia and around the world where Diaspora Oromos live. It has a lot of importance in our community lives. We celebrate Irreechaa to thank Waaqaa (God) for the blessings and mercies we have received throughout the past year at the sacred place.

We celebrate Irreechaa not only to thank Waaqaa (God) also to welcome the new season of plentiful harvests after the dark and rainy winter season associated with nature and creature. On Irreechaa Day, friends, family, and relatives gather together and celebrate with joy and happiness. Irreechaa Day brings people closer to each other and makes social bonds. We also celebrate Irreechaa National Day to follow our tradition and religion in society.

Somalia: Sexual Abuse by African Union Soldiers

AU soldiers and sexual abusers are from: Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Sierra Leone.
hrwSeptember 8, 2014, Nairobi (Human Rights Watch) – Soldiers from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have sexually abused and exploited vulnerable Somali women and girls on their bases in Mogadishu, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Troop-contributing countries, the African Union (AU), and donors to AMISOM should urgently address these abuses and strengthen procedures inside Somalia to seek justice.
The 71-page report, “‘The Power These Men Have Over Us’: Sexual Exploitation and Abuse by African Union Forces in Somalia,” documents the sexual exploitation and abuse of Somali women and girls on two AMISOM bases in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, since 2013. The AU soldiers, relying on Somali intermediaries, have used a range of tactics, including humanitarian aid, to coerce vulnerable women and girls into sexual activity. They have also raped or otherwise sexually assaulted women who were seeking medical assistance or water at AMISOM bases. Human Rights Watch interviewed 21 women and girls who described being raped or sexually exploited by Ugandan or Burundian military personnel serving with the AU forces.

Ethiopia: A Generation at Risk, Plight of Oromo Students

HRLHA Fine

HRLHA Urgent Action
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 06, 2014
The human rights abuses against Oromo Students in different universities have continued unabated over the past six months- more than a hundred Oromo students were extra-judicially wounded or killed, while thousands were jailed by a special squad: the “Agazi” force
This harsh crackdown against the Oromo students, which resulted in deaths, arrests, detentions and disappearances, happened following a peaceful protest by the Oromo students and the Oromo people  in April -  May  2014 against  the so-called  “Integrated Master Plan of Addis Ababa”. This plan was targeted at the annexation of many small towns of Oromia to the capital Addis Ababa. It would have meant the eviction of around six million Oromos from their lands and long-time livelihoods without being consulted or giving consent. The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) has repeatedly expressed its deep concern about such human rights violations against the Oromo nation by the EPRDF government[1]

Poverty on the Streets of Addis Ababa

Published on September 1st, 2014 | by Meredith Maulsby
Published on September 1st, 2014 | by Meredith Maulsby
September 2, 2014 (The baines report) — Poverty can easily be seen throughout the capital of Ethiopia, but nowhere is it more evident than when you pass a beggar on the street.  Beggars are everywhere in Addis Ababa, and they represent a vast range of demographics. There are men, women, children of all ages and conditions– some with their mothers, some without, and the severely disabled.
