Ethiopia Opposition Candidate Dies After Attack in Northwest

William Davison
(BloombergBusiness) — An Ethiopian parliamentary candidate for the opposition Blue Party died after being assaulted in Debre Markos, a town in the country’s northwest, the group said.
Two people attacked Samuel Awoke, 29, with a club and knife as he returned home alone from a night out with friends, spokesman Yonatan Tesfaye said by phone Tuesday from the capital, Addis Ababa.
“We are trying to figure out who are the killers and the reasons,” he said, citing suspicions it was politically motivated. Ethiopian Communications Minister Redwan Hussien said in a text message that a suspect has been apprehended and the attack may have stemmed from a legal dispute.

Arms of Ethiopia’s Regime Surveillance Network Reaches Washington DC

(Oromo Press) — The TPLF/EPRDF regime of Ethiopia exports spies and thugs to Washington DC to harass and weaken the organizational capacity of Oromos in diaspora.  It is becoming very common in Washington DC to see Ethiopia’s surveillance against Oromo-American Citizens in action.  The government uses poor, illiterate and semi literate collaborators; pays them salaries in US dollars, puts them in suits and Hondas, and decent housing in DC, Virginia and Maryland so they can conduct surveillance on the Oromo people.  These spies have attempted and occasionally succeeded in infiltrating Oromo institutions in the Washington DC area.

Kenya: How Far Is Kenya From Ethiopia? Chronicles of an Exiled Journalist

By Habtamu Seyoum
Unlike in Kenya where opinion on every issue is split between the two main coalitions, Ethiopia is a federal state ruled by a single dominant political party that practices a strict brand of socialism that places the state above everything else. The ruling Ethiopian People Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), which came to power in 1991 after a guerilla war against the bloody Mengistu Haille Mariam regime, holds total political sway. The coalition, which consists of four political parties, holds 499 out of the 547 national assembly seats.
